Twenty Fifth Run, Groping in the Dark

Now, after he somehow got through breakfast.

Klein asked Brynhildr to man his office and locked himself up alone in his room.

Today is August 19th.

There are still 3 more days until the poisoning incident.

“What I need to know is what kind of secret agreement Saga and Hermes has huh.”

Klein went to his desk and once again tried to clarify the points that are still unclear in what he knows.

First, why would Saga want to poison Klein in the first place?

Second, who would benefit from poisoning him?

Third, the reason why Brynhildr killed him.

The things he wants to find out are divided roughly into these 3 points.

Klein doesn’t want to die unless he has to so he plans to find out about all three in this loop if possible.

After writing them down, Klein started to speculate about them one by one.

“It’s not like the act of killing me itself will earn them more profit.
That’s why it would be natural to assume that someone asked them to assassinate me with some kind of reward as compensation huh.”

Since he gave them a lot of commercial favors, that’s the first thing he thinks of.

That led to the second question.
Who would benefit from having Klein killed?

In other words, who’s the client?

However, no matter how hard he thinks about it, he can’t tell who it is at all.

“Laguna is out of the question.
Since his territory in the west is still unstable, he wouldn’t extend his reach to the east at this time.
For the Eastern Count, the Asgard house should be one of the many local lords and he should have no just cause to take over my territory.”

When thinking of the people who would target his life, these two came up as his first candidates since he had a conflict with them in his past lives.

However, it is unlikely to be the two of them at this point in time.

If he has to come up with more suspects then——-there is only one more.

“Judging from how this involved Brynhilde, it wouldn’t be a stretch that this somehow involved His Highness too huh.”

The most likely suspect he derived through the process of elimination is the First Prince who he had recently forged a friendly relationship with him.

However, if the Prince was the mastermind behind his assassination then he has another problem.

Klein has no idea why the prince would target him.

Certainly, the silver mines are something that’s very attractive but Klein still hasn’t finished setting them up yet.

If he has to put himself into the prince’s shoes then at least he would start targeting Klein after some work is done on the mines.

That way, he would be able to stably obtain the profits from them.

“Stealing something when it’s still in the middle of development would only increase the trouble of managing them.
But if it’s not the silver mines then……what exactly is he after?”

Even if it’s profitable, taking the mines from Klein at this time would only give the prince a minor profit.

In the first place, Klein is supposed to be in an alliance with the prince.

From what he can see, the prince is having a hard time finding himself a trustworthy ally.

It doesn’t make sense if he suddenly wants to destroy an alliance that he recently went out of his way to form.

——-maybe he’s only acting friendly on the surface but he actually wants to kill me?

If that is the prince’s intention then Klein would break off their relationship immediately.

But, what kind of profit would be worth having a company in his favor kill a territory-owning-viscount who would be acting as his hands and feet in the future?

Klein couldn’t imagine it at all.

“ARGGHHH! What the hell! If I can’t tell the reason then how can I deal with my situation!? Just who would benefit from my death!?”

He has no suspects.

There certainly are a lot of people that he is suspicious of but he can’t tell their motive.

What he knows is that Saga is the perpetrator while Hermes is somehow involved.

Nothing has progressed at all since he started speculating.
Forgetting even to tone his voice down——-Klein is now holding his head.

Even if he thinks about other motives and the benefit of killing him, he’s still clueless.

“Saga company, Hermes company, Brynhildr…….Unnnn.”

They all gathered inside the Asgard territory because of the First Prince’s order.

It’s clear that the First Prince’s agenda is hidden somewhere.

Setting aside the mastermind.

Let’s think about the person who killed him, Brynhildr.

“That’s right.
The most unknown factor here is Brynhildr.
Why did she come to kill me back then?”

Klein has concluded that the prince did not collude with Hermes to kill him.

After all, he can’t see any merit from that.

If the prince wants him dead then he could have Brynhildr kill him at any time.

She would have killed him immediately if he showed any sign of betrayal and she indeed has the skill to conceal that it’s her work.

That’s why she has no need to have me [Poisoned at the Meeting].

“Assuming that Brynhildr is always following my movement, why did she kill me only at the moment I infiltrated Hermes’s office? Maybe she doesn’t want me to find something inside Hermes’s office? Or maybe she thought that I was about to harm Hermes?”

There are multiple possibilities here as well.
But now it’s only two.

Either she was afraid that some kind of collusion would come to light.

Or that she has to eliminate anyone that tries to harm Hermes.

Considering the situation he was in, those are the possibilities he can come up with.

After writing them down on his note, he has to growl as he stares at what he wrote down.

“If it’s one or another then…….no, maybe it’s both? Maybe they are working together and she killed me because I was about to find out? No, I can’t confirm that they are working together either, Hmm…….”

Klein, whose head is about to explode, continued to groan to himself for about 5 minutes.

——Then eventually, he stopped thinking.

“Fine, I quit.
If I can’t think of it myself then the only correct answer would be to rely on others.”

Just like how Marie did it, he stopped trying to solve the problem himself——–and decided to rely on others.

So, who should he consult about this?

After thinking of candidates, he has his eyes on two people.

“I guess I should try talking to Trek first huh.
Then depending on how it goes, I will go to Hans later.

The meeting is due in a few days and Trek should be inside the territory.

However, it seems that he has to attend various meetings so it would be hard to keep track of him.

The only option is to schedule an appointment.

“Let’s leave the prince and Brynhildr aside and look into Hermes first……..it takes a merchant to con a merchant after all.”

To learn more about a merchant, the quickest way is to consult another merchant.

Thinking so, Klein wrote a letter to Trek.

TLN: Reminder, Hans is his guard captain.
